CHRISTIAN FORMATION

St. Patrick’s provides Christian formation offerings that span a lifetime. From Sunday Morning Nursery Care to Monday Night Adult Christian Formation Classes, we offer a variety of faith-building venues. On Sunday mornings we provide age-appropriate, theme-based classes for children, beginning at 9:45 a.m., including Children’s Liturgy during our 10:00 a.m. service, as well as Christian formation classes for older children and adults following services. Our Christian Formation offerings are not limited to Sunday mornings –- we provide a children’s Christian Formation and music program called “Music in Motion” offered on seven Friday afternoons throughout the year (4:30 p.m.), as well as adult formation with our: Wednesday morning Women’s Bible Study; topic-based Monday Evening Adult Christian Formation Classes; Wednesday Morning Eucharist, and a monthly Wednesday Book Study. The Sunday morning programs all depend on volunteer adult and teen teachers, who work in teams, so that no instructor is required to teach alone. Volunteers are always needed for this growing program, and are MOST WELCOME. Please contact the Rev. Paula Clark Green 202-342-2822, or greenp@stpatsdc.org. Following is a brief summary of our Christian Formation offerings.

SUNDAY MORNING CHRISTIAN FORMATION:

Sunday Morning Nursery is provided by certified caregivers for our youngest parishioners during our 10:00 a.m. service from 9:45 a.m. until 12:00 noon .

Sunday School instruction and liturgy is offered to children age 3 through 2nd grade, beginning promptly at 9:45 a.m., BEFORE the 10 a.m. service. Children return to the main service before the offertory to receive communion with their families.

Sunday Morning Christian Formation for Older Children, grades 3 through 6, is offered AFTER the 10 a.m. service. It follows a theme-based, seasonally appropriate curriculum, that in the 2006-2007 school year has included units on homelessness, Jesus’ parables and special liturgical dramas performed at the 10 a.m. service.

Adult Sunday Morning Christian Formation is offered following the 10:00 a.m. service on selected Sundays with rotating themes and speakers.

Outreach/Intergenerational Activities allow all ages to work together to exercise their faith in action. Our outreach activities, typically held on long holiday weekends, allow all generations of the congregation to gather after the 10 a.m. service and serve our community. Some of our outreach activities include: the preparation of goodie boxes for our boarding school and college students, the collection and preparation of food and clothing for homeless persons and animals, and the preparation of cookies for local firefighters and police officers.

Advent Workshops help us to prepare for the Christmas season with hands-on activities for all ages, including decorating and stocking Christmas food bags for needy persons, making Christmas ornaments, preparing and writing Christmas cards for soldiers overseas.

Bible Buddies is an on-going, Intergenerational Christian Formation activity which encourages students, Pre-Kindergarten through 6 th grade to memorize Bible information or prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. There is a monthly memorization assignment that is recited to an adult mentor/Buddy. The adult Buddy encourages the student and honors them after the completion of the monthly assignment.

Holiday Activities provide a forum for the whole congregation to gather and celebrate. Our special holiday activities include Episcopal School Sunday, the Epiphany Fiesta, St. Patrick’s Day Celebration, and Easter Egg Hunt.

WEEKDAY CHRISTIAN FORMATION:

Music In Motion is a music program for children in grades K-2. Music in motion is held on seven lively Friday afternoons throughout the school year ( 4:30 ) and offers games, songs and PIZZA! For more information, please contact Dr. Adele Lynch, 202-342-2823, lynch@stpatsdc.org.

The Journey to Adulthood curriculum is offered for students in grades 7-9. The studies are paired with our Cambiata choir program on selected Monday evenings. These sessions meet from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first half of the evening the Cambiata choir rehearses, followed by a light dinner. After dinner there is discussion, prayer and study in an informal setting. For more information, please contact Dr. Adele Lynch, Music Director, (202) 342-2823 or Ms. Karen Melchar at (301) 229-9049.

The Journey to Adulthood YAC curriculum is offered for students in grades 10 – 12. The Young Adults in the Church (YAC) program allows older students to explore their faith and ministry in the Church. At St. Patrick’s we combine the YAC program with a choir, Nova Lux, which sings periodically with our adult Cantoris choir. The YAC program is led by Deborah Estes (202) 966-9376 and Nancy Vaughn (301) 657-3514.

Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Study offers a cursory study of the Bible in a supportive environment. Children are welcome. The group meets from 9 to 10:15 a.m. in the All Saints Chapel. For more information, please contact the Rev. Paula Clark Green, 202-342-2822, greenp@stpatsdc.org.

Monday Evening Adult Christian Formation Classes provide topic-specific study, both on an introductory and advanced level. Topics have included “Christianity 101”, “Bible 101”, “The Bible as Literature,” and “How Is God Manifest?” Classes meet Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, please contact the Rev. Elizabeth S. McWhorter or the Rev. Paula Clark Green at (202) 342-2800.

Wednesday Morning Eucharist provides a brief, mid-week communion worship service. The service is held from 7:00 - 7:30 a.m. in the All Saints Chapel, and is followed by continental breakfast in the Church Library.

Monthly Book Study generally meets the first Wednesday of each month, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. The group decides upon the books to be read each month. For more information, please contact Regina Hablutzel at rhablutzel@verizon.net or Martha Johnson at mostlymar@aol.com
