Parish Life-------

Acolytes

An acolyte is an attendant or helper. Acolytes at St. Patrick’s assist the priest in leading worship service and are responsible for helping set the tone of the service by joining in worship and prayers of the congregation. Boys and girls 3 rd Grade and up.

Altar Guild

Vital to the smooth and spiritual functioning of every service, the Altar Guild serves as a quiet ministry. The Guild is responsible for set-up and clean-up of the altar. Volunteers serve in one week rotations, about every 4 weeks. Members on duty prepare the sacramental vessels, linens, hangings, candles and furnishings prior to each service.

Flower Guild

Each Sunday, with the exception of those in Advent and Lent, flowers are placed in the Nave and in the Chapel, beautifully enhancing worship experiences for all. These flowers remain for the week and are enjoyed by all who pass through our doors.

Grand Oaks

Serving residents at Grand Oaks Assisted Living adjacent to Sibley Hospital, this monthly ministry conducts the liturgy and serves communion to those who are unable to be present at the Celebration.

Greeters

Providing a warm smile and friendly “hello”, our greeters brighten each Sunday morning for all who enter. This vital ministry helps to orient and welcome both new and returning parishioners each week. Opportunities are: courtyard entrance or downstairs in our nursery. (circle one)

Hospitality

One of the best and long standing traditions here at St. Patrick’s is the fellowship time held in the Great Hall following the 10:00am service. This is an opportunity to provide food after the service and to create a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere for friends and newcomers.

Lay Readers

In an opportunity to speak, share the Word, and be grounded in the St. Patrick’s community, we invite individuals to help lead our services by reading from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, and the Intercessions.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs)

Lay Eucharistic Ministers have long been a valuable ministry to the Church. Humbly and faithfully, individuals serve in the distribution of sacred elements of Holy Eucharist to the people of God… young and old, male and female, parishioners, and visitors. To become a LEM, you must be invited by the Rector to serve and be licensed by the Bishop.

Office Volunteers

Important to the smooth operation of the church office, our volunteers welcome visitors, help with mailings, and answer phones several mornings during the week. Individuals can schedule once a month or weekly.

Pastoral Visiting Lay Eucharistic Ministers (PVLEMs)

Extending the community from those attending church to include those at home, the PVLEMs take the Holy Communion to members of the congregation who are not able to be present at the Celebration. This critical ministry provides laity an opportunity to serve others, while deepening their relationship with God. You must be invited by the Rector to serve and be licensed by the Bishop.

Teen Assistants

Serving our youngest parishioners in the nursery, pre-school class and free play. The teen assistants help supervise the children downstairs during service, offering parents a chance to worship and participate in adult formation.

Ushers

Essential to service, the ushers perform routine tasks of greeting worshipers, passing out bulletins, orienting newcomers, extending the offering plate, and bringing sacraments to the altar. These volunteers are the backbone of a smooth functioning service and create a welcome atmosphere for all who enter.

Outreach -------

Haiti Partnership Program

St. Patrick’s has maintained an ongoing and committed relationship with St. Etienne and Christ Redempteur Schools located in Haiti for over 25 years. The Church and Day School support a variety of ongoing projects.

Native American Task Force

Affiliated with the Mountains and Deserts Ministry for over 20 years, St. Patrick’s has worked to support and find solutions to the problems facing small Native American churches, isolated by distance and neglect. As partners with seven churches on four reservations (Paiute, Arapaho, Shoshone/Bannock and Ute) and one urban church in San Jose, CA, St. Patrick’s is the only non-Native American partner.

So Others Might Eat (SOME)

Cook Breakfast: If you are an early morning riser, then this is the ministry for you. Seven times a year (October-April) on the second Sunday of the month, volunteers arrive at 6am to the SOME kitchen and prepare breakfast for the homeless.

Make a Casserole: Do you like to cook, but can’t get away to serve the homeless in person? Many unknown souls cook hearty meals and place their offering in the SOME freezer (located in the Church basement, next to the nursery).

St. Philip’s the Evangelist Episcopal Church

Food Pantry: St. Philip’s maintains an emergency food pantry that serves a wide community and provides food to hundreds of people referred by local social service agencies. St. Patrick’s weekly food collections remain the single largest outside source of food donations. Each week, church volunteers deliver this food and staff the pantry.

Christmas Food Drive: Each Christmas, volunteers buy food, fill and transport Christmas food bags, and meet with the wonderful folks at St. Philip’s who distribute these dinners to needy families in Anacostia.

Adult Evening Classes

New this year, themed series of classes for adults taught by the clergy in 6-8 week sessions.

Book Study

Meets the first Wednesday of each month. The group decides the books to be read.

Teachers

We need volunteers to teach our young people. Manageable time commitment. We provide training!

Women’s Bible Study

Offering a cursory study of the Bible in a supportive prayerful environment. Moms and babies welcome.
