Reflecting on Martin Luther King, Jr.

Grace and peace. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have been 91 years old today. Although he died before I was born, he inspires generations of people seeking justice. At today’s healing service, I offered quotes of Dr. King’s as a reflection on his contribution to all of us. Here are a few quotes that might help you in your prayers today:

  • Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.
  • There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right.
  • People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.

On Friday, Joe White and I will be attending the ordination of our former seminarian Michael Palmisano at the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. When he graduated last year, he wrote a letter of thanks to St. Patrick’s beginning with these words: “You’ve formed me and loved me so well these past two years.” The appreciation we have for Michael and his wife Theresa continues, so I ask your prayers on Friday as they begin a new chapter in their life and ministry.

Blessings,
