Being of Service to Our Community

Summer is usually associated with a lull in church activity, but it’s been a busy time here at St. Patrick’s! While your Vestry has been hard at work on the search process for our next rector (see last week’s message for details), parishioners have been hard at work being of service to our community.

Thanks to your generous donations of food items, our Service Saturdays in June and July were a great success. On each Service Saturday, we assemble 200 bag lunches for Salvation Army’s Grate Patrol to distribute to our neighbors in need. The Day School takes on the support of Grate Patrol during the school year, but before then there are still two more opportunities for you to sign up to contribute on August 13 and September 10.

After a break due to the pandemic, during which we continued to supply them with ingredients, our beloved SOME Breakfast ministry has finally returned. Our intrepid breakfast crew meets at So Others Might Eat at 6am on a weekend morning to prepare hot breakfast for our hungry neighbors. Our next two breakfasts will be on Saturday, July 23 and Saturday, August 27. Then in September, we will return to our usual schedule of cooking breakfast on the second Saturday of the month through next April. If you can crack an egg and you don’t mind getting up early, contact Karen Melchar to join the breakfast crew.

While service projects are always meaningful, St. Patrick’s is also known for making them FUN! This Sunday, plan to join us for our Christmas in July celebration. We will sing Christmas carols in church, and then munch on festive goodies in the Great Hall. During this event, we will also be collecting unwrapped children’s toys for donation to Toys for Tots. And if that hasn’t satisfied your sweet tooth, mark your calendars for our annual Samaritan Ministry Ice Cream Social on August 28 — we will feast on ice cream sundaes while learning more about the important work of Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington and how we can get involved.

We expect to restart our food pantry ministry soon. Our longtime partner, St. Philip’s, is no longer able to accept our donations, but we are exploring partnering with Samaritan Ministry. Details are still being finalized, so keep your eye on the announcements.

You may have noticed several recent articles about the influx of migrants in DC who need support. If you are looking for ways to help, check out MigrantHelpDC.

Your parish survey responses showed that our outreach ministries are some of the most important parts of what we do here at St. Patrick’s. Please help us continue this wonderful work by participating in some of these great service opportunities.
